Yasmin Side Effect Lawsuit

The birth control market has grown exponentially in recent years for many reasons, and the market for those who want to avoid unwanted pregnancies has been saturated with a plethora of new products. Companies have been formulating new medications and other devices that are intended to provide the security of birth control, but unfortunately, some of them have been linked to the development of serious side effects.

Below you'll find information regarding one of the market leaders when it comes to birth control, and it's known by the brand name of Yasmin. You'll also find information regarding how the product works, the problems it encountered in terms of the side effects to which it was linked, the government's reaction and how you should proceed if you or someone you love has been harmed as a result of using Yasmin.

Yasmin - Birth Control Pill Injury

Yasmin is a birth control pill that's administered via prescription and manufactured by Bayer Healthcare. The drug was seen initially as revolutionary by some because of the positive results it generated. Yasmin works by preventing ovulation in a woman, and it also prompts slight physiological changes in the uterus and cervix. Specifically, if an egg should somehow be fertilized, the changes Yasmin provides prevent the fertilized egg from attaching to the uterus.

Eventually, Yasmin was used for off-label uses, including for treatment of the symptoms of acne and for the symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder, which is also known as PMDD. The symptoms of PMDD include lack of sleep, irritability, anxiety and dizziness, and much like its early results with birth control, Yasmin proved to be highly effective.

Side Effects of Yasmin Birth Control Pill

Unfortunately, Yasmin eventually ran into problems. The first scrutiny that fell onto Yasmin from different levels of government, including Attorneys General of different states who sent the manufacturer warning letters regarding its claims that Yasmin was safer than it actually was and that it could be used to treat symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, or PMS, instead of PMDD. The advertising campaign was pulled from the airwaves as a result.

Yasmin Injury - Deep Vein Thrombosis

Additionally, many women who were using Yasmin began to develop serious, dangerous side effects that were of sufficient volume to draw unwanted publicity. These side effects included:
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
  • Pulmonary Embolisms
  • Heart Attacks
  • Strokes
  • Kidney Damage
  • Death
DVT is a condition whereby blood clots form deep inside the body, usually in the legs. When the clots break off and travel through the blood stream, they can reach the lungs and result in pulmonary embolisms, which are blood clots in the lungs. If a pulmonary embolism is not caught quickly, it can be deadly.

FDA Action Against Yasmin

Given the reports of these side effects, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) eventually got involved. It disseminated a public health warning regarding Yasmin, and it eventually required the makers of the drug to place a 'Black Box Warning' on all labels of the medication that clearly indicate the risks involved with using it. At this point, Yasmin has not been recalled, but that does not mean that there are not options available to those who have been harmed as a result of using this product.
