Trasylol Side Effect Injury | Bayer Pharmaceuticals Lawsuit, Attorney and Lawyer

The world of medical science has been innovating new ways to treat countless different medical problems, and for decades, one of the areas of the body that's been causing as many deaths as any other is the heart. As heart surgery techniques and possibilities continued to multiply, one problem began to arise, and that was controlling the amount of internal bleeding that occurred in the patient during these procedures.

One of the leading medications that hit the market to aid with this bleeding issue was Trasylol. The drug encountered early success but soon came under intense scrutiny due to its link to severe side effects. Below you'll find information regarding how Trasylol works, the problems it encountered, the government's reaction and how you should proceed if you've suffered as a result of this medication.

Trasylol & Bayer, A.G.

Trasylol was manufactured by Bayer, A.G. and was originally approved for marketing and distribution in the United States by the FDA in 1993. It immediately caught on in medical circles and became widely used in heart surgeries. Estimates indicate that millions of injections of Trasylol were administered prior to open heart procedures in order to control bleeding.

Trasylol is made from the lung tissue of cattle, and is a type of medication that's known as an antifibrinolytic. Trasylol prevents bleeding and functions by inactivating plasmin, an enzyme that is produced in the blood to break down fibrin, a major component of blood clots. Trasylol would make sure that this enzyme did not perform as it normally would, and internal bleeding was largely prevented.

Trasylol Side Effects and Injuries

After more than a decade on the market, negative reports began to surface regarding Trasylol. Perhaps one of the reasons it took as long as it did for these issues to surface is because most patients do not even know when Trasylol was used prior to heart surgery. Rather, the decision regarding the use of this medication was made by the surgeon.

These reports began to be noticed by different aspects of the medical science community, and Trasylol was ultimately scrutinized by the New England Journal of Medicine. Ultimately, the results of the publication's analysis of Trasylol were published in 2006. Overall, the study concluded that there was a troubling connection between Trasylol and increased risk of renal (kidney) failure, myocardial infarction, heart failure or stroke in patients who have had heart surgery.

In addition to the study performed by the New England Journal of Medicine, the news program 60 Minutes also ran a feature on Trasylol that delved into the side effects allegedly linked to this medication. This feature was broadcast in February of 2008. Below are a few examples of these side effects:
  • Kidney failure
  • Heart attacks
  • Strokes
  • Ecephalopathy
  • Death

Trasylol Deaths and Kidney Dialysis

Overall, some estimates indicate that as many as 22,000 people have died as a result of using Trasylol and another 11,000 require repeated and ongoing kidney dialysis treatment in order to deal with the damage caused by this medication.

FDA Actions and Trasylol

There have been several steps taken by the FDA in response to these reports. The first came in late 2007, when the FDA requested that Bayer suspend the marketing of Trasylol given the reports of danger, and Bayer agreed to do so. The FDA also issued a public health warning regarding these alleged side effects.

Ultimately, in May of 2008, Bayer announced that it was initiating a nationwide Trasylol recall due to these reports and other potential problems that the drug was encountering, including numerous lawsuits that had been filed around the United States.
