Levaquin Side Effect Injury - Attorney Lawyer and Lawsuits

Bacterial infections have long been prevalent in every part of the world, and the fact is that some of them can be deadly. As a result, the medical science community would develop several medications that were formulated to deal with these serious medical problems. Over the years, an entire set of antibiotic medication has been developed and released onto the marketplace.

One of those medications is known as Levaquin. Below you'll find information regarding what it's intended to treat, how it works, the problems that arose and side effects linked to Levaquin, government action taken in response to the problem and finally how you should proceed if you or someone you love has been harmed as a result of using this medication.

How does Levaquin work?

Levaquin is known in the medical community as a 'broad spectrum' antibiotic, which means that it's used and can be useful against several different forms of bacterial infections. It is also used quite often to treat patients in a general sense until lab test results are available and the true nature of the infection can be identified.

Levaquin is a member of a group of medications known as fluoroquinolones, sometimes simply referred to as 'quinolones.' Levaquin works by running interference with two bacterial enzymes that are necessary for bacteria to be able to copy themselves and multiply. These enzymes are known as topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase. The most common maladies for which Levaquin is used include pneumonia, bronchitis and infections of the:
  • Sinuses
  • Skin
  • Urinary tract
  • Kidney
  • Prostate

Levaquin Side Effects

Unfortunately, after a few years on the market, reports began to surface that several people who either were using or had used Levaquin were experiencing troubling and painful side effects. In general, these side effects included the tendency for tendons in the body to become damaged or even to rupture. Below are a few of the areas of the body that were harmed in patients who were using Levaquin:
  • Achilles tendon rupture
  • Achilles tendon inflammation
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Rotator cuff injuries
  • Biceps injuries
  • Hand injuries
  • Thumb injuries
As a result, the FDA began to review Levaquin and ultimately took steps to warn the public about these dangers.

FDA Actions and Levaquin

After a drug is approved by the FDA, it often does not act again on a certain drug until a sufficient number of reports are generated that prompt it to once again get involved. Ultimately, this is what occurred with Levaquin, and the FDA issued an order to the makers of the drug that they must include a warning on all labels of Levaquin that distinctly alert users of the dangers involved.

This is known as a 'Black Box Warning,' and is one of the more severe steps that the FDA can take against a drug that's potentially defective short of ordering a recall. To date, no recall has been issued, but if enough side effects continue to develop in patients, it's likely that the FDA will take additional steps to correct the problem.
