Byetta - Diabetes Drug

More people are being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes than ever before in the United States. This condition is one that requires constant diligence and management in order to keep the patient's system under control. If type 2 diabetes is not properly managed, it can lead to a very dangerous situation for the patient in a very short amount of time.

Given the increased demand for diabetes medications, several new drugs have hit the market in recent years. One of those drugs is Byetta, and below you'll find information regarding how it works in the body, the problems it encountered in terms of side effects, the government's reaction to these problems and how you should proceed if you've been harmed as a result of using Byetta.

Byetta - How it Works

Byetta was originally approved for sale and distribution in the United States by the FDA in 2005, and Eli Lilly and Co. is its manufacturer. It sold well in its first year on the market, and it was seen as an innovative medication because of the substances used to formulate it and the intricate way in which it works once it's ingested.

Byetta is basically a synthetic lizard hormone. It is known in medical circles as an incretin mimetic, which means that it mimics the functions of naturally-occurring hormones in the body. Byetta mimics the functions of hormones in that it increases insulin production in response to meals eaten by the patient as well as decreases the amount of glucose, or sugar, that the liver produces.

In addition to helping regulate the production of the substances that are related to diabetes, it also slows the process by which food empties from the stomach and into the intestines. This is important because it reduces the amount of food that people will eat and thereby reduces the risk that an insulin/glucose imbalance could develop based on the lowered amounts of food that need to be processed.

Byetta Side Effects

Unfortunately, it wasn't long before reports of side effects that were allegedly linked to the use of Byetta began to arise. Specifically, the FDA became aware of 30 reports of patients who were using Byetta and who had encountered serious problems with their pancreas. After further investigation, it was discovered that these patients and many others were at risk for developing a serious side effect known as acute necrotizing pancreatitis.

Acute necrotizing pancreatitis is a condition that obviously attacks the pancreas, and if it's not diagnosed early and treated properly, it can be fatal after the pancreas and other internal organs shut down in response to the spread of this condition. Common symptoms of acute necrotizing pancreatitis include:
  • Nausea
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Vomiting
If the pancreas is not working properly, diabetics are placed in an immediate situation of danger, as the pancreas hormones that include insulin, and if the body of a diabetic is not producing enough of this substance, the downward medical spiral that the patient will experience is sharp, painful and potentially fatal.

FDA and Byetta Injury

In response to these reports, the FDA decided to investigate the matter further, and the ultimate conclusion it drew was that it needed to issue a public statement and warning regarding the use of Byetta.
