Actavis Pain Patch

Pain is something that millions of people feel with every waking moment, and while many assume that those who deal with pain will simply take an over-the-counter pill from time to time and deal with it, the fact is that some chronic pain is so severe that life becomes almost unmanageable for those who suffer from it.

As a result, several innovative products hit the market in recent years, and one of them was an entire product line of pain patches that were manufactured by Actavis, Inc. These patches soon encountered problems, however, and below you'll find information regarding the nature of the products, the problems they encountered, the government's reaction and how you should proceed if you've been harmed as a result of using any of these products.

Actavis Pain Patch Products - Fentanyl Side Effects

Actavis, Inc. is a corporation that provides the market with several different medical products, and one that was approved and enjoyed a high degree of promise was a line of pain patches designed to provide those who suffer from chronic pain with automatic relief. The patches, which are filled with the pain medication fentanyl, are affixed to the skin where the pain is most severe. When the patient suffers from acute pain, the patch was supposed to release a dose of fentanyl to automatically minimize the pain that the patient was feeling.

Most of these patches had a pre-programmed limit in terms of the amount of medication that was released per hour, and the patches were supposed to last for three days at a time. They were seen as a positive step for the medical science world because people had become dependent on oral pain medications, and even those who hadn't could become sick from taking too many pills over a long period of time.

Actavis Pain Patch Side Effects

After a relatively short time on the market and during which time the pain patch product line enjoyed a high volume of sales, negative reports began to surface with those who had been using them. Basically, the reports stated that people were becoming sick from using them, and initially most did not understand how that occurred.

Ultimately, more analysis was completed, and it was discovered that these patches had what was termed a 'possible fold over defect' that led to the potential for too much fentanyl to be released into the body. Therefore, the sickness that people felt was an overdose of fentanyl. Taking in too much of this powerful pain medication can not only be dangerous, but also deadly.

Generally, taking in too much fentanyl can lead to the depression of the respiratory system. This in turn slows breathing and by result the heart rate. When this occurs over a long period of time, additional risks that include heart attacks and other adverse cardiovascular events can occur, many of which can be fatal if they are not treated promptly and properly.

Actavis Pain Patch FDA Recall

Clearly, the FDA soon took note of this issue and worked with Actavis, Inc. on two separate recalls of these products. Initially, 14 lots of the product were pulled from shelves, but ultimately, all of the products were recalled by the company and on a voluntary basis. Below is the information regarding the lots and the brand names that were subject to these recalls:
