Washington RSD Attorney - Lawyers Helping Victims of RSD and CRPS

Most people are not familiar with the condition known as RSD/CRPS. These are actually two terms that mean the same thing, and RSD stands for Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, while CRPS stands for Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. If you are here, though, you obviously understand what it means to suffer from this condition, and you likely need legal help.

The common denominator involved with RSD/CRPS is excruciating pain in different parts of the body. The pain can become so severe that a person may lose the will to endure another day, but below you'll find information regarding RSD/CRPS and information regarding obtaining the legal help you need if your condition was caused by the actions of someone else.

Causes of Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy and Complex Regional Pain Syndrome

Perhaps the most difficult aspect of RSD/CRPS is that there is no real agreement as to the causes of this condition. Researchers and medical professionals alike have been debating potential causes for years, but there is some agreement that it can be traced to some original form of trauma. This trauma is usually physical in nature, and patients who suffer from this condition have often dealt with the following circumstances in their pasts:
  • Auto accidents
  • Motorcycle accidents
  • Battery
  • Blunt force trauma
  • Nerve damage
If a person who suffers from RSD/CRPS can trace the condition back to the original trauma, it presents a tremendous advantage for any possible legal claim.

Symptoms of RSD/CRPS

Despite the mystery that can surround the causes of RSD/CRPS, the symptoms that have been discovered are quite specific, and they appear below, courtesy of the Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome Association:
  • Severe burning pain
  • Pathological changes in bone and skin
  • Excessive sweating
  • Tissue swelling
  • Extreme sensitivity to touch
There are also two types of RSD/CRPS, and their descriptions appear below:
  • CRPS Type I (also referred to as RSD) - cases in which the nerve injury cannot be immediately identified

  • CRPS Type II (also referred to as Causalgia) - cases in which a distinct "major" nerve injury has occurred

  • CRPS is best described in terms of an injury to a nerve or soft tissue (e.g. broken bone) that does not follow the normal healing path

  • CRPS development does not appear to depend on the magnitude of the injury. The sympathetic nervous system seems to assume an abnormal function after an injury.

  • Since there is no single laboratory test to diagnose CRPS, the physician must assess and document both subjective complaints (medical history) and, if present, objective findings (physical examination).
Statistically, more than 1.2 million Americans currently suffer from this condition. There is obviously no cure since the cause cannot be clearly identified, but what is clear is that the person who suffers from it is facing a lifetime of pain and heavy medication.

How a Washington RSD Attorney Can Help

If you have suffered a traumatic injury that you believe led to the development of RSD/CRPS, you have a lifetime of damages to recover if that injury was a result of someone else's negligence, recklessness or intentional act. When the courts in Washington calculate damages, they typically include:
  • Medical costs
  • Loss of income
  • Costs of ongoing rehabilitation
  • Psychological treatment
  • Potential surgery
Additionally, the plaintiff would likely have a strong case for asking for damages for pain and suffering, as this is exactly what describes this condition.

In order to hold the party or parties who may have caused this condition properly accountable, you need to seek the proper legal help.
